Jerzy Tchórzewski (1928-1999)
Painter, graphic artist and educator. Born April 24, 1928 in Siedlce, died December 25, 1999 in Warsaw. He fought in the AK (Home Army) (1943-44), studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow (1946-51), where he joined the Second Cracow Group; from 1959 he collaborated with the international group Phases. He made his debut in 1948/49 at the First Exhibition of Modern Art, creating surrealist landscapes, and after 1955, abstract cosmic visions. Since 1954 he taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, and was a professor from 1987 until his retirement in 1998. Winner of prestigious awards (Norwid, Jan Cybis, Herder, "Solidarity" award). His works were presented at the Sao Paulo Biennale (1959, 1965) and Venice Biennale (1968), among others.
