Jerzy Tchórzewski fought in the Home Army (AK) during the war. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków from 1946 to 1951. During his studies, he became involved with the Kraków Group. He made his debut at the First Exhibition of Modern Art in Kraków in 1948; in 1955, he participated in an exhibition at the Arsenal in Warsaw, where he won an award. By that time, he was already living in Warsaw, where in 1954 he began teaching at the Academy of Fine Arts (he retired in 1998). Even from his early, figurative period (1948–1955), when he placed figures and fantastical creatures in imaginary landscapes, he was distinguished by interests and a type of imagination close to Surrealism. In the second half of the 1950s, he began painting abstract works evoking cosmic cataclysms and eruptions of matter, illuminated by jagged lines of lightning contrasting with a dark background. Occasionally, human and animal forms appeared in his compositions. The convergence of Tchórzewski’s surreal visions with parallel trends in Informel painting led him to join the international artistic movement Phases in 1959. In later years, the artist complicated the texture of his paintings, utilizing, among other things, the drying properties of thick layers of paint and, in the case of gouache, the effects of crumpled paper. From the late 1970s onward, he readily embraced religious themes. This trend reached its peak in the 1980s, when the artist became involved with an independent art movement, frequently exhibiting in churches and at private shows. In 1986, he received the independent Jan Cybis Award.
