Andrzej Strumiłło (1928–2020) was born in Vilnius in 1928. He graduated from the Department of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków (1950). He worked in painting, drawing, book illustration, poster art, sculpture, exhibition design, stage design, and photography. He exhibited his works around the world. He taught painting and art history at several universities. He made numerous trips to Asian countries. From 1982 to 1984, he headed the United Nations Graphics Studio in New York. He designed many diverse book publications. He was active in the preservation of nature and Poland’s cultural heritage. He was awarded the title of Honorary Citizen of Suwałki and Ambassador of Culture of Podlasie. He received a number of awards, decorations, and orders, including: the Knight’s, Officer’s, and Commander’s Crosses of the Order of Polonia Restituta, the Gloria Artis Gold Medal, and the Gold Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
