Wood carving; height 20.5 cm;
Poland, Zakopane, 1930s.
Geometrized, solid figure of a young boy wearing a hat, a mugshot and pants rolled up to the knees. With his hands pressed against his torso and his head slightly bowed. The sculpture is an excellent example of a unique style, based on the native Podhale tradition, combined with European art trends developed at the time.
The State School of Wood Industry, operating since 1918, a continuation of the Vocational School of Wood Industry (founded 1878) - under the direction of Karol Stryjeński (1922-1927) and later Marian Wimmer (1936-1939) - managed to bring the School's teaching to the highest artistic level, overcoming dangerous tendencies toward the production of licentious souvenirs.
