Pietro KÜFFERLE
Verona 1871 - 1942 Pontedera
Graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Verona, where he was a pupil of sculptor Grazioso Spazzi. From 1889 to 1897 he worked in Prague. In 1891-1892, he created a large bas-relief for the facade of the Prince Vittorio Emanuel School in Verona. In 1899 he was invited to St. Petersburg to the Bot brothers' workshop, where he worked for the next eight years, establishing his own school of artistic marble work. In 1903, commissioned by the Imperial Pazia Corps, he made busts of all the emperors of Russia. In 1914, he made a monumental statue of Christ descending from Mount Tabor for the tombstone of Anna Vershchinina in Novichok Cemetery in St. Petersburg. He also had many other prestigious realizations. In October 1917, he fled with his family to Italy and settled in the Tuscan town of Pontedera. At that time he began using the pseudonym Vastok. In the 1920s he lived in Lodi for several years. He is buried in the city cemetery in Pontedera, and has a replica of Christ from the tombstone of Vershinina on his grave. The offered statue is a reduction of this sculpture.
