Jan Żaroffe (1888–1952) was a sculptor associated with Krynica. He graduated from the Vocational School of the Wood Industry in Zakopane and the Higher School of Decorative Arts in Kraków. Ksawery Dunikowski considered him one of the finest practicing sculptors in Poland and sent his students to him for apprenticeships. He carved in stone and created marble tombstones (including those at the cemetery in Nowy Sącz). The “Patria” in Krynica—a luxury hotel owned by Jan Kiepura and built in 1933—was designed by him; he also created a wooden panorama of Krynica as a gift for the then-Dutch princess, Julianna. In 1935, on the occasion of the Ice Hockey World Championships, Jan Żaroffe adorned Krynica with ice sculptures that he had designed and carved himself. He also became famous as a creator of wooden crafts.
