Monuments and views of Krakow, according to the Dictionary of Polish Artists, were the subject of Wladyslaw Jarocki's paintings especially during the occupation. The watercolor "Barbican" was created in the interwar period. At the time, the artist was the dean of the faculty of painting and sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. From 1923 to 1938 he was also in charge of organizing the Polish department at the annual exhibitions of the Carnegie Institute in the USA.
