Provenance:

The painting, like two other watercolors by Grott (items 14, 42), comes from the collection of the pianist, Marta Naziemska-Rawczyńska (1894-1983) from Cracow. Her portrait, painted by Leon Wyczółkowski, is displayed under item 16.



According to Tadeusz Dobrowolski, Wyczółkowski had quite a few disciples, but he considered Teodor Grott to be his artistic heir. On the antiquarian market, Grott's flowers and still lifes created in the interwar period are most common, while landscapes appear less frequently. Hence, a watercolor painted before World War I, from the collection of Marta Naziemska, a friend of Wyczółkowski, exhibited at the Perpetual Exhibition of the Society of Friends of Fine Arts in Krakow in 1911, is among the artist's more interesting paintings.

Teodor Grott (Częstochowa 1884 - Cracow 1972) - studied at the Cracow Academy of Fine Arts from 1903 to 1909, first under Florian Cynk, then under Leon Wyczółkowski. During his studies, he received medals for his schoolwork several times. Then he continued his education in Paris, from where he went to Brussels and London and traveled to Italy. He lived permanently in Cracow, where - starting in 1910 - he exhibited a lot at the Society of Friends of Fine Arts. In time, he became an honorary member of the Society; from 1949, he was office manager and exhibition organizer. From 1912 he also belonged to the Society of Polish Artists Art. He painted landscapes (including those of the Tatra Mountains, Ukraine, Italy and France), old architecture, flowers and still lifes, portraits and nudes. He most often used the perfectly mastered technique of watercolor, but also painted in oil. He was involved in artistic crafts; together with his wife, he founded and ran a kilim factory in Cracow.
