Southern Germany 18th Century, Pair of paintings, Saint Peter and Saint Maria Magdalene
In the canvas presented here, Saint Peter is depicted - recognizable by the attributes of the keys and the book. The saint is caught in a moment of prayer in front of the book of the Sacred Scriptures, immersed in a natural, rocky landscape. The gaze is directed towards the viewer, and the face is rendered with simple brush strokes and bright colors; as are the blue and yellow robes. The serene and composed figure stands out against a backdrop of light colors. From the same artist is Magdalene - recognizable by the skull, the pot of ointments, and the cross on which she prays. Both figures are characterized by a lively rendering of color which imbues the material of the garments with a flickering touch. Oil on canvas and wood panel, 40,5 x 30 cm
