Leon LEWKOWICZ (1890-1950)
Jewish portrait painter. Studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow under the direction of T. Axentowicz. Spent the interwar years mostly in Cracow, maintaining contacts with the local community of Jewish artists. He exhibited regularly at TPSP in Krakow and Lviv. He painted primarily portraits - tinged with a delicate touch of sentimentalism, images of Gypsy or Jewish children and genre scenes, less frequently landscapes and still lifes. After World War II, he was deported to the USSR and died in Kazakhstan. His few surviving works are in museum collections in Cracow and Warsaw; the fate of much of his output remains unknown.
