Camaieu-like landscape depicting the biblical legend from Genesis, chapter 21, 14-17, according to which Hagar, the wife of Abraham, is rescued by an angel after being cast into the desert, who shows her a path to life-saving water. The biblical scene is set on sandy ground with low vegetation reminiscent of the Netherlands, with the angel hovering over a thistle next to which the pregnant Hagar had taken a seat - a symbol of the struggle for survival in an inhospitable region.
