THE RETURN FROM THE MARKET
Oil on wood. Parquetted.
47.5 x 78.5 cm.
The view falls between two large groups of trees onto a landscape under a high, gray, cloudy sky: on the left, a large gate with flanking walls, through which a shepherd is driving his flock out onto a wide path, on which a couple carrying heavy loads can be seen in the foreground, just returning from the market. At the right edge of the picture is a wide landscape with a narrow path on which a rider in a red jacket and a carriage are traveling in front of the turquoise silhouette of a town.
The attribution to the artist is due to the Belgian art historian and former museum curator Dr. Joost Vander Auwera, according to whom it is an early work by Vrancx and was probably painted before 1608. The painting has many details that point to the master's later style. (1410959) (18)
