Biography
He studied in Vienna and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków under Teodor Axentowicz and Leon Wyczółkowski. In Paris, he studied sculpture under Antoine Bourdelle, and in Leipzig at the Academy of Graphic Arts (1912–13). He is regarded as the founder of modern Polish woodcut; he was also a master of watercolor. He exhibited alongside the Formists. He was a co-founder of the “Rytm” Association of Visual Artists. From 1922 to 1934, he headed the Department of Graphic Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, and from 1932 onward, he served as a professor there. In his work, he frequently drew upon folk traditions, particularly those of the Podhale region. Oil paintings are extremely rare in this artist’s body of work.
