Condition: very good. Terauchi Fukutaro (1891–1964) is a rather enigmatic figure in the history of Japanese art. Relatively little reliable biographical information has survived, and some of the available data is based on exhibition catalogs and collectors’ analyses. In 1910, he began studying at a private art school run by Kiyoteru Kuroda, one of the most important promoters of Western-style painting in Japan. He was associated with the Hakuba Association (Hakuba-kai), a group of artists promoting Western-style painting (yōga). He was most active artistically in the 1920s and 1930s, though his works also appeared after World War II. Terauchi primarily created watercolors,
landscapes, scenes from traditional Japan, and woodblock prints later published by the Kyoto Hanga-in Publishing Company.10562/57
