pencil,paper 52 x 37 cm in light passe - partout, framed in a gilded,
handmade frame 68 x 52 cm "simmler" type. Thename comes from the well-known Warsaw master of furniture art Jakub Simmler, who lived in the 18th century. The drawing is dated "1876" and has a not very legible signature.
The drawing is a precise reproduction of a painting by Pierre Mignard (1612-1695) located in the Louvre Museum in Paris. St. Cecilia, the patron saint of musicians, playing the harp accompanied by an angel standing to the left reading a score; in the foreground are musical instruments on the ground; a tambourine, oboe and flute with sheet music books, to the right a viola with bow and an open sheet music book on a table.
In the British Museum's collection since 1954 is a copperplate engraving, identical in size to the presented drawing, made by Claude Duflos (1665-1727). Pierre Mignard also known as Le Romain (born November 17, 1612 in Troyes, died May 30, 1695 in Paris) - French painter, director of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture. Pierre Mignard is considered a representative of the traditional academic direction in 17th-century French painting. His work was most influenced by Italian painters, especially the Venetians. Critics also trace many of his sources of inspiration to Rubens.
