Biography
Graphic artist and painter. He studied in Kraków from 1937 to 1942 at the State Institute of Fine Arts and from 1945 to 1948 at the Academy of Fine Arts. The artist grouped his works into series, such as Self-Portraits, Fairground Portraits, and Studies for a Portrait of Józef Gielniak. His largest series consisted of woodcuts inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy. In his paintings, he employed a compact, roughly hewn, and distorted form, as seen, for example, in *Horse*, 1967. He received, among other honors, the independent Jan Cybis Award (1988), the title of Honorary Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków (1993), and the City of Kraków Award (1998). In 2006, a solo exhibition of the artist’s work was held at the National Museum in Kraków.
