Biography
He was a printmaker, painter, illustrator, and architect. He studied architecture at the Wrocław University of Technology and painting and printmaking at the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Wrocław. Initially, he worked in poster art, painting, and illustrative and advertising graphics. In the 1970s, he collaborated with the STU Theater in Kraków. Since 1983, he has been creating stage designs (primarily for the Samuel Beckett Theater in New York), followed by multimedia experiments (e.g., in 1988, for the Grateful Dead, a stage design featuring 52 banners measuring 27x 68 m, illuminated by 440 spotlights). He designed the set for Handel’s “Messiah,” staged at the Vatican to mark the 250th anniversary of the work’s composition. In the 1990s, he created multimedia performances in Japan, such as “Eyes.” He designed the Tower of Light for Abu Dhabi (a 157-meter-tall glass obelisk commemorating the 25th anniversary of the founding of the United Arab Emirates). He developed the concept for the massive multimedia spectacle “Kraków 2000.”
