Sweden (Stockholm) 5 Öre 1693 – Karl XI (1660-1697) with Karl XII Countermark in Riga, 1705 – Russian Siege
3.25g. XF-/XF. Countermark: Karl XII crowned monogram. Haljak 1587. Host coin: Mintmaster’s monogram AS – Anders Strömmer. KM 310; SM 192. Rare. From December 1705 to January 1706, Riga endured a siege, leading to a severe cash shortage. To address this, General Governor Carl Gustav Frölich authorized the countershaping of Swedish one-mark and five-öre coins with a special Karl XII monogram, effectively doubling their value. However, due to the town's opposition, Karl XII of Sweden revoked this decree in January 1706.
