August II the Strong, Coronation Ducat, 1697, Dresden
On September 15, 1697, Frederick I August was crowned King of Poland at Wawel Cathedral. Commemorative coins were minted for the occasion and distributed to those attending the coronation.
Obverse:
King August II on horseback, wearing Roman attire and a Roman helmet, facing right.
Reverse:
A crown. On either side of the crown, the letters D–D. Below the crown, crossed palm branches. Below that, an inscription in five lines: F A E S / EL IN REG / POLONIARUM / D 17/27 IUN / A 1697
Condition: NGC AU58
A beautifully struck and well-preserved piece for this type. Good detail. Brilliance and mint mirror finish. High NGC grade. In this condition, the piece is rare and quite difficult to find on the collector’s market.
