Sigismund II Augustus, Trojak 1562, Vilnius – wide – rare and beautiful
A typologically distinctive portrait trojak of Sigismund II Augustus. The coin was struck on a larger blank (diameter approx. 27 mm).
On the obverse, a bust of the king of the first type (Cesnulis/Ivanauskas).
On the reverse, the first type of Pogoń (Cesnulis/Ivanauskas).
A variant with the king’s title on the obverse ending in ... ??? and a rim inscription on the reverse ... LITV
A punctuation variant with a ??? separating the rim inscription on the obverse and a cross separating the rim inscription on the reverse.
Condition: 2/2+
A flaw in the coin resulting in a localized under-strike in the rim, making it impossible to precisely determine the inscription variant and punctuation variant. A beautifully struck and well-preserved piece for this type. Beautiful detail. Brilliance and plenty of mint luster on the reverse. A rare variety struck on a large blank. In this state of preservation (despite the under-strike), the coin is very rare and very difficult to find on the collector’s market. A beautiful piece for discerning collectors.
