Digital print on fabric, 1/1 cm. 101,8x66Xu Yang (b. 1996, Shandong) lives and works in London, UK. She studied art painting at Wimbledon College of Arts (UAL) and graduated in painting from the Royal College of Art in 2020. Xu Yang's work is inspired by Rococo painting. The moral disciplines of the 20th century judged this period as empty, corrupt and opulent, connoting Rococo as a frivolous artistic expression subservient to aristocratic power. Yang seeks to reclaim his aesthetic to speak to our contemporary, exploring his personal interests, childhood fantasies, fetishes and gender identity through painting, photography and mixed media works.
Yang recently received a commission from the Tate Collective for LGBTQIA+ History Month (2023), and is the winner of the Barbican Arts Group Trust ArtWorks Open (2019). In 2020 Xu was selected for the Contemporary Young Artist Prize, and curated an RCA Fine Art Graduates exhibition for the Kovet.art gallery (2021). She has several solo exhibitions around the world to her credit.
