Born in Gorsulov, the artist settled in Poland in 1921. He began his artistic studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow under the tutelage of professors Pawel Dadlez, Kazimierz Sichulski and Friedrich Pautsch, but due to the outbreak of World War II the young artist was forced to abandon his education for a few years. In 1945 he resumed his studies, this time taking lessons in the studio of Hanna Rudzka-Cybis. A long-time teacher at the Department of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts, he was awarded the Silver and Gold Cross of Merit and the Knight's Cross of the Order of Rebirth of Poland for his pedagogical work. The first solo exhibition of Michael Kochanowski's works was held in 1960 at the House of Artists, and his works were also exhibited at many exhibitions both at home and abroad. Throughout the years of his work, Kochanowski sought his own forms of artistic expression. Particularly distinctive in Kochanowski's oeuvre are his abstract compositions composed of geometric arrangements of forms, as well as relief constructions.
