This small study is one of several works with which the artist prepared the large painting Munich Beer Garden and exhibited it at the Paris Salon in the spring of 1884. It shows a child in a white dress taking long, deep draughts from a glass held out by his mother. It is interesting that Liebermann places this scene in the foreground of his main work and thus emphasizes the care of adults for the little ones as a leitmotif.
