"The figure of a faun, perhaps an idol of the Lord, refers loosely to the
ancient figure of a sleeping faun and is a deliberate contradiction of the
dynamics of the painting The Procession of Bacchus, a representation of
rest. At the same time, the phallic motif alludes to
mythological representations. It was not my aim
to refer to any specific mythological scene.
The motif here is to show the composition of nudes in motion,
which is one of my favorite themes.
A separate theme is also the formation of the
form from the drawing, hence the multitude of lines and accompanying
of stains, which, however, do not attempt to imitate realistically
bodies, but construct them from signs. To achieve
desired effect I wanted to as closely as possible
relate to the dark lines and lights made
with white crayon on gray paper of the drawing and to convey the
the lightness of this drawing in the painting."
