The painting "Aquarius" belongs to the early works of Grzegorz Pieniak, whose artistic sensitivity was strongly influenced by contact with nature. The talent of Pieniak, who grew up among the greenery of the Warmian countryside, was quickly noticed and his studies at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts allowed him to perfect his painting technique, especially the technique of the old masters. This attention to craftsmanship, rare among the younger generation of artists, is one of the distinguishing features of Pieniak's painting. The offered painting, made in oil technique, is characterized by reference to the old masters not only within the workshop. The figurative depiction of a young boy crouching on the shore of a lake is maintained in an unreal atmosphere that brings to mind the paintings of Witold Pruszkowski. This is because "Aquarius" combines elements of realism with romantic fantasy, moodiness and mysticism. The frame limited to the figure of a young man makes the painting almost an anatomical study. Interest in the male body is a leitmotif of Pieniak's work. On the one hand, an extremely universal theme in art, on the other, testifying to a deep interest in what is current, in Pieniak's recent paintings it has become a pretext for analyzing broader social problems and his own experiences and traumas.
