The painting makes a grotesque reference to the socialist cult of making work beyond the norm - the randomness of its success or failure is symbolized by the wheel of fortune, which, after all, can stop at the word "Punishment." The figure in the upper right - neither a government official, nor a blue-collar worker, or perhaps the very ouster of the system" - equipped with boxing gloves, is ready to take the fight from the spot. The blue, shapeless ghosts in the vicinity of the small grid may be these "enemies of the people" - smug and full of trepidation.
Eugeniusz Markowski (8.11.1912 in Warsaw - 24.02.2007 there) - Polish painter, stage designer and graphic artist. Graduate of the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts; after receiving his diploma, he began a stage design internship, interrupted by the outbreak of World War II. After September 1939, he left the country for Italy; there he worked for many years as a journalist and diplomat (later also in Canada). He returned to Poland in 1955 and only then devoted himself fully to art; since 1969 he returned to the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts as a teacher.
Eugeniusz Markowski's work is characterized by an expressionist style, full of emotion and intense means of expression. His paintings were often dynamic, with strong compositional tension, expressive lines and saturated colors. The artist drew inspiration from his observations of everyday life, human emotions and social relations, which he showed in a manner full of irony, grotesque and sometimes humor. His figures and scenes were symbolic, often exaggerating reality, which gave his works a deep metaphorical dimension.
Markowski was also known for designing theatrical sets, which influenced his approach to composition - his paintings often resembled theatrical scenes, full of drama and clarity.
