signed, dated and described on the back: BOŻENNA BISKUPSKA | KLATKA - NIC I | 100 x 120 | oil | canvas | 2014
She studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan in 1970-1972, then at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, where she received her diploma with honors in the studio of Prof. Tadeusz Dominik in 1976. The artist is active in painting and sculpture. She represented Poland at the XLI Art Biennale in Venice in 1984. The painting on display continues the "Cages" series begun in 1991, when the sculpture-installation so entitled was created. The following year Biskupska began painting "Cages," which took abstract forms in 1994. "Cages" are rectangular compositions with a smaller rectangle-frame marked inside. The effect of a picture within a picture, achieved in this way, enhances the sense of confinement. The space is limited by the edges of the painting as well as the inner, virtual, frame. "Klatka - Nothing I" is one of the extremely subdued compositions, in which white and gray dominate. The surface of the painting with its texture resembles a slab of concrete - a material used by the artist in sculptural realizations. A plastic, white, irregular line, drawn with thickly laid paint along the side and bottom edges, gives the impression that the "cage" opens upwards.
