Biography
He studied at the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Łódź from 1946 to 1951. In the early period of his career, he drew on the traditions of Impressionism; in the late 1950s, he became fascinated by Informel. The transformations taking place in his painting focus primarily on a gradual departure from direct, overly literal forms. He created works that utilize “object-based” allusions and refer, for example, to Christian iconography, as well as series of abstract compositions (e.g., “Gorges,” “Variations on the Number Four,” “Talmudic Studies”), or those drawing on the artist’s own experiences (“Highways”). The artist represented Poland at the São Paulo Biennial (1969) and the Venice Biennale (1972). In 1977, he was awarded the Cyprian Kamil Norwid Art Critics’ Prize, and in 1990, he was honored with the prestigious Jan Cybis Prize
