oil, canvas, 80 x 60 cm, signed on the underside: 'Kati Dobrogo, described on the back: '"Self-portrait" | oil on canvas | 80 x 60 | 2025 | Kati Dobrogo'.
Kati Dobrogo is a native of Milanowek, but currently lives and works in Warsaw's Zoliborz district. She graduated in textile print design, from the Academy of Fine Arts in Lodz in 2014, and in artistic printmaking from the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk in 2016. She works mainly in oil and watercolor painting. She is inspired by human beings, especially women, how they are perceived, how they see and feel themselves. She is fascinated by carnality, sensuality, eroticism and intimacy. In her paintings she seeks blissful peace, courage and tenderness - especially where shame has been present for years. Almost from the beginning of her work, the main motif in her works has been the female body, especially the motif of the vagina, which embodies the essence of femininity. She often hears that this word sounds "too medical," but for her it carries great strength, naturalness and truth. In her art, she strives to highlight the beauty and diversity of the female body, while giving women the courage to accept themselves. She wants her painting to contribute to the disenchantment of the mystery of the vagina, which is still a taboo subject. A second, equally important theme is the cyclical nature of a woman's life. Month, which forces one to stop, to look at herself, initiated a series entitled "I bleed." Her paintings are not literal. Saturated colors, often sharp, overscaled frames and large formats, at first glance make the subject unreal, in order to show and emphasize its meaning after a while. The latest paintings, are a kind of therapy for the artist. In bodily self-portraits she shows and reworks her relationship with her own body, its changeability and non-ideality. Her goal is to support the widely understood femininity, to tame the taboo of her body geography, to break the silence and build a space where this femininity can be celebrated without shame and without restrictions.
