Wlastimil Hofman's art was strongly rooted in the trend of symbolic painting, thanks to which the artist's works often hide complex contents.
The presented self-portrait comes from the last years of the artist's life. During this period Wlastimil Hofman struggled with his deteriorating health and the death of his beloved wife, thus the self-image can be interpreted as a personification of sorrow and pain.
The painting is expressive in its form and uses a narrow range of colors. The work is part of an extremely complex series of self-portraits by the painter, which were created in the early period of Wlastimil Hofman's creative activity.
