BOLSHEVIKS ATTACKED BY A POLISH AIRCRAFT
1919–20, 1938 Oil on cardboard mounted on canvas (modern backing); 45.5 x 59.5 cm Signed lower left: St. Studencki 1938. The painting refers to the events of the Polish-Bolshevik War (1919–1921), during which the nascent Polish Air Force played a significant role in reconnaissance and combat operations. Despite their small numbers, Polish pilots conducted reconnaissance flights, directed artillery fire, and attacked enemy columns and their rear areas. Aircraft appearing over the front lines caused unease among Bolshevik troops, and their presence often influenced the course of local engagements. The low-flying biplane depicted in the painting symbolizes the Polish Army’s reconnaissance superiority and modernity, contrasting with the traditional rural scenery and cavalry, which also played an important role in the victorious campaign of 1920.
