"A Roman emperor, philosopher, soldier, reformer, and poet. One of the most colorful figures of antiquity. A military genius on par with Julius Caesar and Alexander the Great. Devoted to the Hellenistic gods, he fought against Christianity. He lost his life at the age of thirty-two.
The novel is imbued with the atmosphere of the end of the old world, being replaced by something worse. The pagans are gradually fading into the past, and with them the splendor of the empire fades, never to be as strong as it once was.
Vidal masterfully recreates the realities of the second half of the 4th century CE. *Julian* is regarded as one of the best historical novels he ever wrote. Source: Erica Publishing
