Fridtjof Wedel-Jarlsberg Nansen (born October 10, 1861, in Store Frøen; died May 13, 1930, in Lysaker) – Norwegian oceanographer, polar explorer, and international social activist; Commander of the Legion of Honor and Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

In 1883, he gained fame in the Husebyrennet ski race, completing the route from Bergen to Oslo.

In 1887–1888, he undertook the first ski expedition across Greenland, thereby proving that the entire island is covered in ice. During a forced overwintering on the island, in Godthaab (now Nuuk, the capital of Greenland), he lived in an igloo with the Inuit, learning to hunt from them and becoming familiar with their customs and methods of survival in the harsh climate.

From 1893 to 1896, he led an expedition to the Arctic Ocean aboard the *Fram* (the name comes from the Norwegian word for “forward”), a ship specially designed by Colin Archer. During the voyage, Nansen conducted extensive oceanographic research. He reached a point 300 km from the North Pole. He then decided, together with Hjalmar Johansen, to continue on to the Pole using skis and a sled pulled by a team of 28 dogs, but they failed to reach their destination. Their return journey took them through the Franz Josef Land archipelago, where Nansen met Frederick Jackson, who was preparing to reach the Pole aboard the ship “Windward.”
