The publication is to consist of three volumes, of which Volume I covers the history of painting from the 1760s to the third quarter of the 19th century, focusing solely on the work of the older generation of artists active after 1850. The work of the younger generation of painters, active in the second half of the century and later—including Matejko and Grottger—is discussed in Volume II. This division of the history of painting was influenced, among other things, by technical considerations, namely the desire to maintain uniformity in the volumes, each of which has its own separate index. The relevant literature is included in Volume III.
