New York 1941; Greenberg, Publisher, Inc. 15.5x23.5 cm, pp. 174, black and white illustrations in the text, publisher's cloth binding. Good condition (scuffs and dings to the binding).
First edition. A richly illustrated book written in exile, being an artistic record of the author's experiences during his escape from Nazism. Hoffmeister - a Czech cartoonist, caricaturist and representative of the avant-garde - here combines elements of satire, grotesque and autobiographical reflection. The publication, also published a few years later in the UK as The Unwilling Tourist, uses the metaphor of "caged animals" as an image of people forced to live in exile and deprived of freedom. The illustrations and short texts create a poignant yet ironic-humorous story about the plight of the refugee during World War II. Piece autographed and dedicated by the author.
