Majolica Vase with Montelupo-Style Decoration / Albarello
Porcelain, height 27 cm, top diameter 9 cm, base diameter 11.5 cm
The vase is hand-painted and glazed; the main scene features a portrait of a woman in profile between the letters “D” and “I.” On the other side is the Medici coat of arms. On the bottom, a rooster mark accompanied by a number, hand-painted, resembles the marks found on majolica ceramics from the Cantagalli manufactory in Florence—the “singing rooster.” The Cantagalli manufactory in Florence was active primarily from approximately 1861 to 1934. Founded by a family with a long tradition in ceramics, it gained fame in the 19th century, particularly under the leadership of Ulisse Cantagalli, specializing in the production of high-quality Renaissance-style majolica.
