Leonor Fini (1907-1996), Portrait of a Woman
Color lithograph on paper, hand-signed p.d.: Leonor Fini
Sheet dimensions: 66 × 52 cm
Condition: very good
Provenance: private collection, France
Sensual and subtle portrait of a woman by Leonor Fini, one of the most distinctive figures of European Surrealism. The artist's characteristic almost ethereal form of the figure is in keeping with her fascination with feminine strength, independence and mystery. The effect of diffused light and the delicate range of cool colors give the composition an aura of melancholy and oneirism. The work is from a limited edition (9 of 60) and bears the artist's handwritten signature.
Leonor Fini (1907-1996) - Argentine-Italian-French painter, graphic designer, set and costume designer. She was born in Buenos Aires, grew up in Trieste, and was active in Paris from the 1930s. Although she was associated with the Surrealist circle (she was friends with Dalí, Ernst and Carrington, among others), she always maintained her creative independence. Her art is dominated by strong, often allegorical female figures, embodying sensuality, independence and archetypal energies. She created paintings, prints, book illustrations (including those for de Sade and Apuleius), as well as theatrical and opera costumes and sets. Today, her works are in the collections of the Centre Pompidou, MoMA and Tate Modern, among others.
