René François Ghislain Magritte - Belgian painter, surrealist. Called "the author of words and things," he liked to rename objects, an example of which would be the painting The Treachery of Images. His paintings shocked and stirred controversy, and are distinguished by their poetic moodiness and precise drawing. Painted in 1926, the painting "The Lost Jockey" is considered Magritte's surrealist manifesto.
