Woodcut (20th-century print), paper, 40 x 30 cm.
The print depicts an event rooted in the apocrypha and Christian tradition that took place between Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection. Jesus descends into the underworld (the abyss/limbo) to free the souls of the righteous who have died since the beginning of the world.
The figure of Christ: Visible in the center, surrounded by a luminous nimbus (halo) emanating powerful rays. He bends down to extend his hand and pull a kneeling figure (often identified as John the Baptist or Adam). In his other hand, he holds a triumphal banner attached to a large cross.
The Righteous and the Patriarchs: On the left, behind the massive gates of hell, the saved souls of the Old Testament are crowded together. In the foreground stands a muscular, elderly, naked figure with a long beard—this is Adam, resting his hand on the crossbeam. Behind him are Eve and other figures engaged in prayer.
Demons and Monsters: Contrasting the divine peace and dignity of the saved are the fantastical, terrifying beasts and demons created by Dürer’s artistry. In the upper right corner, a winged monster blows a horn, and in the background, from a window niche, another infernal beast bares its fangs and brandishes a spear.
