Biography
Zbigniew Gostomski was an outstanding artist, painter, draughtsman, creator of installations and professor of the Faculty of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. He studied painting from 1953-1959 at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts, where he received his diploma in the studio of Michał Bylina. In 1961-1962, Gostomski received a specialization in artistic tapestry. In 1988 he was given the title of professor at his alma mater. In 1966 he co-founded (with Wieslaw Borowski, Anka Ptaszkowska, Mariusz Tchorek, Henryk Stażewski and Edward Krasinski) the famous Foksal Gallery in Warsaw, with which he remained affiliated until the end of his life. Although his paintings were extremely varied, he was particularly concerned with formal issues - composition and image structure, the illusion of space, geometry and color - which he studied as part of his abstract pictorial compositions. In the mid-1960s, Gostomski began to transfer his considerations into space by creating a series of three-dimensional objects that were transformations of his earlier painting achievements. The issue of integrating a work of art with its surroundings was explored by the artist in numerous enviroments created, among others, as part of the Foksal Gallery (1967) and the Symposium in Wroclaw (1970). In the 1980s and 1990s, objects and their symbolic meanings, which referred to cultural and political reality, began to play an important role in Gostomski's work. At the same time, he did not stop creating numerous abstract compositions returning to the motifs he had been working with since the 1960s.
