Engraving related to the history of the January Uprising. On April 8, in Castle Square, Russians fired on a defenseless crowd during a patriotic demonstration. The exact number of victims is unknown and was kept secret by the Russian authorities so as not to cause panic. The number of several hundred dead and several thousand wounded is sometimes cited. One of the fatally wounded was student Michal Landy, who is probably portrayed in this graphic in the central part of the picture.
