THE MACQUARIE CLIPPER, 1910
Oil on canvas; 66.5 x 46 cm Signed lower right: E.L. Darroch. A three-masted, iron passenger and cargo sailing ship. Launched in June 1875 by the R. & H. Green shipyard in London. Originally named Melbourne. In 1888, the vessel was purchased by the Devitt & Moore Line, which renamed it the Macquarie and put it on a regular London–Sydney route. It was famous for its luxurious cedar-wood cabin interiors and for having a doctor on board. On the return voyage, the cabins were dismantled to make room for a cargo of Australian wool. In 1897, it became a training ship for cadets. In 1904, it was sold to Norway under the name Fortuna. From 1909 onward, it served in Sydney as a coal barge, and in 1953, it was finally scrapped. Starting price: 5,000. Estimate: 6,000–7,000. Inquire about this item.
