POW camp Oflag VII A Murnau was located in barracks built for the Wehrmacht, which housed officers of the Polish Army, including the commander of the Army of Poznan, Major General Tadeusz Kutrzeba. The camp operated from September 25, 1939 until April 29, 1945 when it was liberated by American troops. On the day of liberation, the camp had more than 5000 prisoners of war.
