Banknote with the diagonal overprint “WZÓR.”(with a period) on both sides, between two parallel lines, and the overprint“Bez wartości” (“No value”) appearing twice on each side of the banknote; overprints in red. Sequential banknote number: 078,835; printed design issue number: 1235 (large digits). The banknote is perforated twice diagonally.
This variant of the series (S. 83. A.) is known from records of only 6 different pieces (out of 60 known variants in total); this auction features one of those 6. Apart from the S. 10. A. design series (2 known pieces), this is the rarest variant of the 1919 5 zlotych banknote. The design type without perforations, series S. 80. A., is erroneously considered the rarest; 8 different pieces of this type are known.*
A beautiful piece, confirmed by a high PMG grade, featuring the small stapler holes typical of these designs—which is noted in the description on the slab. This perforated variety, due to the technique used to produce it, is very difficult to obtain in bank-quality condition; pieces such as the one in this auction are extremely rare.
