Biography
In 1940, he began his studies at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Kraków. A member of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences since 1944. Member of the Young Artists’ Group and the Kraków Group. From 1976 to 1992, he was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. A painter, draftsman, set designer, and creator of figurative compositions, still lifes, nudes, landscapes, and religious paintings, in which he combined modern elements with influences from Byzantine art. His unique style is characterized by the use of a flat arrangement of colorful patches outlined with clean contour lines and a synthesized vision of everyday life. He is the author of numerous polychromes in churches (including the Church of the Holy Spirit in Nowe Tychy, the church in Wesoła near Warsaw, and the Orthodox church in Lourdes, France) as well as iconostases (including the Orthodox Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God in Kraków). The artist’s works are held in numerous museum collections in Poland and in private collections (in the U.S., Canada, France, and Germany). In 1993, he was awarded the Grand Prize of the Culture Foundation for outstanding achievements in the field of culture.
